Between clearing a lot and pouring a foundation, there’s a stage most homeowners never think about until it goes wrong — site work. Boundless Excavation & Contracting handles the full scope of site work and grading for builders and property owners throughout the Chattanooga area: rough grading, retaining walls, footer excavation, utility trenching, and finish grade, start to finish on the same crew. We’ve cleared trees, graded the lot, built the driveway, trenched utilities to the house, and installed footers on projects from a half-acre in the Southside to multi-acre sites out toward Ooltewah. If your project needs more than one trade to get from cleared dirt to a buildable pad, that’s exactly the gap we fill. Call (423) 615-4885 for a free estimate.
What Site Work & Grading Actually Involves
Site work covers everything that happens to a piece of ground between land clearing and the trades that build on top of it — rough grading, footer excavation, retaining walls, utility trenching, and finish grading to the elevations your plans call for. We start with a rough grade using a dozer or excavator with GPS or laser grade control, cutting and filling dirt to bring the pad to the elevation your site plan specifies. From there we excavate footers to design depth, form and pour concrete where the scope calls for it, and trench for water, sewer, and utility lines running to the structure. On sloped lots — common throughout this part of Tennessee — retaining walls get built where cut-and-fill grading alone won’t hold the grade. The whole time, we’re managing where water goes: swales, drainage paths, and finish grade all get shaped so runoff moves away from the structure instead of pooling against a foundation. What starts as an uneven, cleared lot ends as a graded, drained pad with footers in and utilities stubbed to the house — ready for the framing crew.
Our Site Work & Grading Process
Step 1 — Site Layout & Rough Grade: We stake out the pad and grade lines from your site plan, then rough-grade with a dozer or excavator running GPS or laser grade control to bring the site to elevation — cutting high spots, filling low ones.
Step 2 — Footer Excavation: We excavate footers to the depth your plans call for, and where the scope includes it, form and pour the concrete footers themselves rather than handing that off to a separate crew.
Step 3 — Utility Trenching: Before digging, we confirm what’s running to the structure — water, sewer, electrical — submit the required Tennessee 811 locate, and trench accordingly once lines are marked.
Step 4 — Retaining Walls & Structural Grading: On sloped lots, we build retaining walls where cut-and-fill grading alone can’t hold the elevation change, and shape drainage swales so water moves off the property the way the grading plan intends.
Step 5 — Finish Grade: The final pass brings the site to finish elevation, smooths and compacts the surface, and confirms drainage is working before we hand the site to your next trade.
Serving Chattanooga and the Surrounding Area
We take on site work and grading projects throughout Hamilton County and the surrounding area — building pads and driveways in neighborhoods like Southside, Northshore, and St. Elmo inside Chattanooga, and larger acreage projects out along Highway 58 toward Harrison and out Highway 27 toward Soddy-Daisy and Dayton. Terrain here isn’t flat, and that shapes almost every site work project we take on — lots near Signal Mountain and Walden’s Ridge often need retaining walls just to hold a level pad, while valley ground with cherty clay soil holds water differently than the rockier ground closer to the ridgelines. We grade to the conditions actually on your lot, not a generic plan.
Why Chattanooga Homeowners & Builders Choose Boundless Excavation & Contracting
Boundless Excavation & Contracting runs site work as one crew from start to finish — the same team that rough-grades your lot also excavates footers, trenches utilities, and brings the site to finish grade, so there’s no handoff between a grading company and an excavation company losing time, or accuracy, in between.
Any project disturbing an acre or more of ground in Tennessee requires coverage under TDEC’s Construction General Permit for stormwater, with erosion and sediment control measures in place before disturbance starts — and any trenching or excavation deeper than a few feet falls under OSHA’s excavation safety standards, which require protective systems on trenches five feet deep or greater. We build permitting and safety into the schedule rather than treating them as afterthoughts.
